50 Ways to Save Water

Watering Your Lawn

Watering Schedules

Watering Your Lawn
To help conserve drinking water, the City of Austin has adopted a water use management ordinance. Violations are Class C misdemeanors, punishable by a fine of $500. The ordinance is enforced, but the primary goal is to work with customers to obtain compliance, not to issue fines. To report violations, you can use an online form or call 311.

The rules for watering your lawn under this ordinance are:
-Through the months of May through September, residential customers may water twice a week. Watering days for odd-numbered addresses are Wednesday and Saturday, and for even-numbered addresses they are Thursday and Sunday.
-Through the months of May through September, no lawn watering may occur between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. except with a hand-held hose.
-Year round, commercial and multi-family homes may only water Tuesdays and Fridays.

Water Waste
The water use management ordinance also prohibits water waste, which is defined as the following:
-Failing to repair a controllable leak, including a broken sprinkler head, a leaking valve, leaking or broken pipes, or a leaking faucet
-Operating a permanently installed irrigation system with a broken head, a head that is out of adjustment where the arc of the spray head is over a street or parking lot or a head that is misting due to high water pressure
-During irrigation allowing water to run off a property such that there is a trail of water that is running in the street for a distance of 50 feet or greater or allowing water to pond in the street or parking lot to a depth greater than ¼ of an inch
